Veganism: A movement ripened by human determination
It all started with The Vegan Society. We hope it doesn’t come across as bragging, but without us, modern veganism as we know it simply wouldn’t be the same! The Vegan Society was founded in November 1944 and it was our co-founder Donald Watson who came up with the word ‘vegan’. It’s incredible that veganism has evolved from a fringe movement to a popular lifestyle choice present on nearly every restaurant menu and on supermarket shelves. All this happened in just the last 74 years, thanks to the hard work of the vegan community in spreading the message. The Vegan Society has been here from the beginning, supporting this growing movement for decades with our materials, advice and campaigning work. Our vision is a world where animals are free to exist in their own right. We promote a lifestyle that excludes, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of animals for the purposes of food, clothing or anything else. We also want a just world for humans, where resources are utilised in a sustainable way. The Vegan Society's mission is to make veganism mainstream. We're working tirelessly to make it an easily-adopted and widely-recognised approach to reducing animal suffering and environmental damage. We do so through peaceful and factual dialogue with individuals, organisations and businesses. We achieve this vision and mission by providing information, supporting and advising individuals and health professionals, caterers, manufacturers, and influencing policy makers. We also fund vegan initiatives set up by members and supporters, and work with volunteers and partners towards making our vision a reality. We work with the media to help reinforce a positive view of veganism and to help a larger audience see that veganism is a rewarding, enjoyable and viable lifestyle. November is World Vegan Month and this year, we launched the first ever app that helps people to go vegan. VeGuide is free to download on Android and iOS devices and contains a combination of daily informational videos, motivational quotes, quizzes, recipes and discounts, all of which aim to help them ease into vegan living. We understand that veganism may feel like a big lifestyle change, which is why the app features two prominent YouTubers, Jay Brave and Rae Likes Froot, who will become your mentors over the course of 30 days. Of course, many vegans say the hardest bit about becoming one was simply making the decision to transition to a plant based and almost everyone says it’s the best thing they’ve ever done! The Vegan Society continues to hold true to the vision of our founding members as we work towards a world in which humans do not exploit other animals. The Vegan Movement in words (Article from the Metro)
Every month (it seems), we’re seeing signs that veganism is becoming ever more popular and accessible. Leon is bringing a roster of new vegan items to its menus. Makeup brands are increasingly going cruelty-free. Supermarkets keep bringing out new plant-based ranges. The strength of the green pound is real…because there are more of us vegans in the UK than ever. In fact, a new study suggests that as much as 7% of the population is now plant-based. Research conducted by comparethemarket.com and supported by Gresham College professor Carolyn Roberts, suggests there’s been an all-mighty spike in the number of vegans in the past two years. Back in 2016, polling by The Vegan Society and Vegan Life magazine showed that around 540,000 people in Great Britan (not the UK) over the age of 15 identified as vegan. They accounted for around 1% of the population. Today, that figure’s risen to 3.5 million. Why? Professor Roberts says it could be down to a heightened concern in environmental matters. ‘Environmental issues continue to rise up the national agenda,’ she says. ‘However, and quite naturally, the desire for change does not always translate into genuine action, as other priorities can overwhelm many of us, particularly those in with demanding jobs and families. ‘The good news is that more practical changes, such as a shift in diet, could be a superior solution to having a positive impact on the environment.’ She says that food accounts for around 20% of all our greenhouse gas emissions and that if all meat eaters switched to a vegan diet, we could roughly half all the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with food. ‘On balance, if greenhouse gases were the only consideration, then switching to a low- or no-meat diet could be of a greater benefit to the environment, and specifically the battle against climate change.’ It’s worth saying, however, that The Vegan Society do have some reservations about the numbers. Dominika Piasecka, spokeswoman for The Vegan Society, said: ‘While The Vegan Society’s 2016 study carried out by Ipsos Mori found there were 542,000 vegans in Great Britain based on a sample of 10,000 respondents, the survey by comparethemarket.com released this month estimated that there are 3.5 million vegans in the UK based on a 2,000 sample. #appetizers #partyfood #vegan #veganfood #vegetarian #vegetarianfood
Catering for the Movement
In October 2018, Corporate Events International launched The Vegan Catering Company to deliver high quality mobile vegan catering for weddings and corporate customers. Vegan is a movement. As we become more aware of the impact on the environment from certain behaviours and ways of life we are becoming more aware of the opportunities to change this. from mass farming to animal cruelty to green house gasses, moving to a vegan diet truly does make a difference and so often a vegan meal is as nice as a meat based meal. Take a 'chilli con carne' or the translation, "chilli with meat'. Take out the meat, replace with mushrooms and take out the stock and replace with marmite (a yeast based product) and you can have a vegan chilli that tastes identical. The Vegan Catering Company is taking the concept of high quality mobile catering, developed by it's sister company The Street Food Catering Company and removing any animal products to deliver delicious vegan food right to your doorstep.
